Do Not Forget

Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on a past struggle or difficulty? The other day I was reminiscing on the last year. There were so many emotions going through my mind. I was overwhelmed with thoughts of anxiety and fear. Racial tensions reached their peak. An upcoming election caused political unrest. The world was experiencing a season unlike any other, and for the first time the future felt unsure.

If you've read my other post entitled “Stress Hurts”, then you remember I literally experienced physical manifestations of stress. Joint pains, fatigue, and acid reflux were all new occurrences for me during this time. Just like one would fight off an attacker, I developed new strategies for combating stress and anxiety. The biggest tactic was finding new security in God. Growing up in church, I intellectually knew the Word of God but new situations meant learning to apply the scriptures. Each morning before heading into work, I read Psalms 91 and other scriptures of healing and protection. Since I was dodging sick patients like Ms. Pacman, I needed the daily reminder. The Word literally became my necessary bread for each day.

Another habit that I acquired during that time was listening to worship music. It was mostly instrumental with soothing melodies. Praise and worship became the background soundtrack in my office. I found that it calmed the racing thoughts and set an atmosphere of peace. The other day I came across one of the playlists that I frequently listened to. Immediately, I was transported back to that day and the feeling of serenity that surrounded me.

Now, it's crazy how much has changed with time. While the coronavirus is still infecting people, the risk for contraction and overall fear has diminished significantly. Though the future is still unsure, a glimmer of hope peaks over the horizon. Sadly, I'll admit that my pandemic practices haven't continued. While reflecting on all the change, I became convicted. Even though the darkness has passed and morning come, I don't ever want to forget the faithfulness of God. I must depend Him as bad as I did this time last year. Trials will come and go; however, we can never let the good times cause forgetfulness. It's so easy to get comfortable. Instead, continue to study God's Word. You never know what may be coming. We must stay ready during these last days. Let's purpose to not forget!

Be encouraged! 😊
