How Crazy Are Your Dreams?

Inspiration can truly arise from any source. Lately, I’ve been watching the television show called “The Food that Built America”. This show details key innovators and how they forever changed the state of the food industry. I was most intrigued by Milton S. Hershey. As his name suggests, he is the founder of the famous candy bar loved by many. His story is interesting in that he built an entire company based on a dream that hadn’t come to manifestation yet. Let’s dive deeper into his story.

Before starting Hershey’s chocolate company, Milton owned a successful caramel business. He was exposed to the chocolate industry at a business exposition. This led him to sell his company in hopes of monetizing this new product. Milton felt that caramel would soon be a thing of the past and that the future was paved in chocolate. This delicacy was well known in Europe and other parts of the world, however, the average American had never tasted it. Furthermore, most chocolate bars had a high cacao content giving it bitter notes. Milk chocolate was made using condensed milk and therefore less creamy. It was mainly consumed in a powder form (i.e., NesQuik or Ovaltine). Milton Hershey had the outrageous dream of using fresh cow’s milk. In doing so, he hoped to create a richer version of the chocolate bar. So, Hershey purchased a vast countryside in Pennsylvania on which he founded a town to support his business. He built a factory, hired workers, and a bought cows for this new town. He even hired a salesman with well-renown skills in marketing for a product that hadn’t been created yet! With the timeline closing on completion of construction, Hershey hired top scientists from around the country to help solve the mystery of milk chocolate. Failed attempt followed by failed attempt, but Milton continued with his city. He proceeded as if he had a million-dollar product, never loosing focus on his goal. Finally, one worker was able to crack the recipe and combine chocolate with fresh milk. The rest is candy history.

So, what big dream are you sitting on? Sometimes, God gives step by step direction in the way that you should go. Other times, He gives a simple word or idea. An extraordinary dream placed deep within your heart. The trick is to let go of fear and pursue it wholeheartedly. Don’t let failure discourage you. Don’t let others call your dream crazy. If there’s one thing we have as Christians, it is the help of the Holy Spirit. He will lead and guide you. He will open doors that no one can shut. But you have to take that first step. When you do, you’ll be surprised at what God can bring into this world through you.

Be encouraged! 😊

Scripture References: Habakkuk 2:2-3 “Then the Lord answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.’”
