Man Cub

This weekend I downloaded Disney Plus. I absolutely love watching all the old movies and TV shows from my childhood. One movie that I have been itching to watch was The Jungle Book. The original cartoon version from 1967 is arguably the best version of them all (maybe followed by the 1994 real life version). Sorry, the most recent one is nowhere close to the others. There’s something about singing along with the songs that makes the movie magical. It’s amazing how God can take something as light-hearted as a cartoon and give some deep relation.

Most of us know the premise of the story but allow me to summarize it here. The movie follows Mowgli a young boy who was raised by wolves in the jungle. It’s adorable how the animals rally around him to care for him. Some are even fascinated by the fact that he’s a Man Cub. However, there is one animal who is less thrilled about his presence in the jungle. His name is Shere Khan the tiger. Throughout the movie, the other animals, Bagheera (the panther) and Baloo (the bear), work to protect Mowgli from Shere Khan and to return him to a man village nearby for safety.

Shere Khan’s reasoning for hunting Mowgli down was simple. He hates man. Since Mowgli is a Man Cub, he hated him as well. He knew that one day Mowgli would grow strong with the ability to hunt him down. This threatened the tiger. It could be that he had prior run ins with men. Mowgli represented all that happened to him. So, he would destroy him while he was small and helpless. Then it hit me. The devil hates me like Shere Khan hates Mowgli. The reasoning is simple. He hates me because of my Father. I am God’s child. When he sees me, he is reminded of the beating that he took when Jesus paid my price in hell. Also, he is reminded of the judgement to come when he will spend eternity in the lake of fire. So, what does he do? He roams about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. He wants to take us out while we are feeble or weak. He wants to snuff out our faith before it can take root in the promises of God. He constantly comes to steal the word and to distract us from growing in our walk with God. He wants to the limit the threat of our impacting the world for Christ.

But there is hope! In the movie, I got chills during the final scene. Shere Khan had finally found Mowgli alone in a field. Toying with the boy, he closed his eyes to give him a running start. Instead of running away in fear, Mowgli grabs a stick. He stands his ground with lips pressed, ready for a fight. As children of God, we do not have to cower in fear. The devil has already been defeated. We must simply stand on the Word of God. Speak the name of Jesus. Just like the fire did to Shere Khan, the Word will send the devil running away in terror. Remind him of who you are in Christ! Stand your ground and fight!

**Sidebar: Look for God in the little things. I promise He will speak to you in ways that you least expect Him Be encouraged! 😊.**

Scripture References: I Peter 5:8-9 (NLT) “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”

I Corinthians 16: 13-14 (NLT) “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.
