“There’s a song that’s inside of my soul. It’s the one that I’ve tried to write over and over again.” As a child, I loved the song Only Hope by Switchfoot. It felt so accurate. There seemed to be a melody written on my heart. A tune that I’d hum but with no words to sing aloud. We all have a song inside of us. It was divinely planted there before our creation. The test comes in learning how to draw that song out to display before the world.
Currently, I’m taking a course at my church entitled Elijah House. The class focuses on inner healing and prayer ministry. It also delves into discovering one’s true self. We explore situations in the past that have shaped our personalities and beliefs. One topic discusses the desire to sing our song. Due to copy right issues, I won’t go too in depth. Suffice it to say the class is one that I highly recommend to everyone. However, there is one main take home message from this discussion that I believe is worth sharing.
Our song is unique. It’s the one thing that only you can sing out. Such an amazing concept! Despite the circumstances surrounding our conception, we each have something to contribute to our world. It’s like a priceless treasure buried deep within us. Many things in life will try to silence our song. Comparison may cause us to feel unworthy of singing aloud. Heartbreak can cause us to lose the joy of singing. Rejection brings fear that our song will go unappreciated. Sometimes it has yet to be discovered as the pressures of life pull our attention elsewhere.
After thirty plus years of life, I am beginning to hear it on the strings of my heart. The melody that was always there has grown louder. I finally feel like I’m coming into my own. The change came as I began to grow closer to God. As my relationship with Him has deepened, He whispers my song over me. Dreams are more vivid. Past fears are disappearing. I’m more aware of who I was created to be. Confidence can arise when I’m assured in Him.
So, what is your song? Can you hear it playing? My challenge to you is to discover its melody. Resist the fear that will try and keep it inside. Surround yourself with people who will help you hear the tune. Then sing it aloud with no regard.
