So, I’ve used this word at least once before in a blog post. It seemed only logical to look up its definition to ensure that I’m using the word properly. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, paradox can mean a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true. Another definition of the word is an argument that apparently derives self-contradictory conclusions by valid deduction from acceptable premises. During this post, please keep in mind the phrase “common sense” and “from acceptable premises” as I believe that it will help in supporting the below discussion.
One of the most interesting paradoxes is the idea that God had every single day written in a book in heaven before we were even conceived in our mother’s womb. There are so many confounding factors that make this fact hard to grasp with the human mind. The main factor is our element of choice. We have the gift of free-will. God’s sovereignty is displayed in that He already knows the result of those choices from the very beginning (before we existed).
Just take a moment to consider the complexity of this idea. We are constantly making decisions as we go through our daily lives. Some are insignificant such as chicken or steak for dinner. Others are terrifying and life changing such as relocating to a new city. We toss the choice back and forth. We way all the options. We consult a higher power or a close friend. All these things are done so that we can make the right decision. Yet, God knew ultimately which path we would take all along.
Now consider this scenario. I’ve not dated in a while. I’m slightly embarrassed to say how long its been. But there’s already a book in heaven written about each of the children that I will bring into this earth. Even though all I can see is today, the choices that I make will bring that future to pass. But how? What if I make the wrong choice? That seems like a lot of pressure, right?
I believe that God leads and guides us along the way. There are times when He may redirect us or put something on our hearts. And if we stumble, He’s there to pick us up. So many times, I’ve had the urge to go somewhere only to discover it wasn’t my idea at all. It was God leading me. When we spend time with Him, we learn to hear His voice. Many times, our inner spirit or conscious begins to sound like Him as we grow closer to His heart. His words become the bread crumbs that lead us down the path towards the purposes that He has for our life.
