I love the tv show “This Is Us”. If you don’t know the premise of the show, then allow me to summarize some of it. The show follows the lives of triplets: Kevin, Kate, and Randall (who is adopted). It depicts the obstacles that the family faces in having an adoptive son of another race during the 70s era. The family also struggles through a major tragedy. There is the constant battle of each member trying to find their place in the family as the tragedy has shaken their foundation.
One of the things that I love about the show is the flashes back and forth in time. The show will illustrate a quick scene about something in the past. It will then flash forward to the present and show how that event affected the character today. This is one of the reasons the show is such a great success. It gives the audience a bird’s eye view. We are can see how choices affect the lives of the characters in real time. We can see the beginning, middle, and end. It reminds us that each moment matters and that every life is important.
But the show caused me to think deeper. That’s how God sees our lives. He knows the end from the beginning. As a little girl filling notebooks full of stories and characters, He knew one day that dream would be awakened, and I’d write novels. During my college education, He knew that I would sit beside a girl in chemistry class and we’d become friends. Even though the relationship only lasted a semester, her spoken words would send me on the path to my current career. In His kindness, He connects us with one another. He orchestrates the smallest detail that in turn effects our entire life. (For example: Jack breaking a plate covered with his breakfast and having to go eat at the restaurant where he’d meet his future wife.)
So, what if we truly trusted His divine plan. Since He can see the full picture, it makes sense to allow Him the right to lead and guide our steps. Instead of death gripping the steering wheel, we should simply sit back and enjoy the ride. He knows the final destination anyway. He knows which detours to take and which roads to avoid. He sees the end from the beginning, and He can bring it to past.
