Will You Be My Valentine?

So, I’ve never had a valentine. I know right, with this smile. Try and contain your shock. No matter my relationship status leading up to the infamous day, I’ve always managed to be single. Don’t worry. I won’t spend this post venting. Also, this blog won’t go on and on about contentment. In singleness, the pendulum can swing towards both ends of the spectrum. In all honesty, it’s normal to have an emotional response (whether positive or negative) to not being in a relationship. Different events, milestones, or even social media can serve as a constant reminder and thereby conjure up a slew of feelings. Though it may sound cliché, this year I’m choosing to focus on my relationship with God. He is the ultimate valentine. Let’s look at a few attributes that will prove this truth.

God is excited about you, His love. The Bible says in Zephaniah 3:17 that He “delights in you” and He “rejoices over you with singing”. One of the simplest examples of this would be of my dog, Shiloh. No matter how long I’m away from home, whether it be four hours or two seconds, he’s always excited to see me. I imagine that God is the same way. Each morning, He can’t wait for you to wake up. Even if you were too busy to pray the day before or if you slipped up and did something wrong, He still loves you. His mercies are new every morning, and He loves singing them over you. I love how Psalms 42:7-8 (MSG) says it: “Then God promises to love me all day, sing songs all through the night! My life is God’s prayer.” If this were a line in a rom-com, then we would all be swooning.

Another aspect of God’s love is that it is everlasting. He is constantly pursuing you. Jeremiah 31:3 (NLT) says it best: “With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself”. God is always calling us back to Him. Have you ever had a “God wink” moment? You know, a moment when you felt like someone was smiling down on you from heaven. I can give a personal example of one such moment. One day, it was pouring down raining. My poor, sweet doggie (yes, another dog story) was whining to be let outside. So, I donned my rain gear and umbrella knowing full well that I’d get soaking wet. As I step to my front door, the rain stopped completely. I was able to walk my dog with clear skies. At the end of our walk as I step onto the front porch, the rain starts up, but we are safely underneath the shelter. Would it have been the end of the world if I got rained on? Of course not. However, it was God’s way of saying “I see you. I care if you get rained on. I’ve got you.” If you take a second, there’s bound to be one such moment when God did something similar for you. It’s His way of pursuing you. He wants you to know that He cares about the minute details of your life.

There’s so much more that I can say about the love of God. He’s the faithful lover. There’s no need to fear for no one will ever come between you. His love won’t grow cold or become bored. Romans 8:37 (NLT) put it this way: “Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love”. Did you hear that? Death can not stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while. I know I just used a quote from The Princess Bride. But God’s ever pursuing love is truly the best love story out there.

So, He’s asking you: “Will you be My Valentine’s?” This year, I’m checking yes. No longer letting things of this world distract me. No longer being sad or disappointed by who didn’t send chocolates. I’m choosing to say yes to the unending pursuit of God’s love. I can see Him in heaven now. “Hey, Gabe! Look! She checked yes!”

Be encouraged! 😊

Scripture References: Hosea 2:16, 19-20 (NLT) “When that day comes,” says the Lord, “you will call me ‘my husband’ instead of ‘my master’… I will make you my wife forever, showing you righteousness and justice, unfailing love and compassion. I will be faithful to you and make you mine, and you will finally know me as the Lord.”
